Electrical work in your home
As a homeowner, carrying out small electrical work can be extremely tempting. However, you should know that any electrical works are not only more complex and complicated them many other household jobs, but most of the works must be carried out a by a fully qualified and professional electrician by law.
FBS Electrical Thanet only employs fully qualified electricians. We are more often than not asked what kind of electrical repairs that homeowners are allowed to carry out, we are also asked when they should call in a fully qualified and experienced electrician. If you are a landlord and would like to know more information on Landlords Electrical Safety Obligations, you can by checking out our electrical blog.
We have put together a small list so you know what electrical works you can carry out without the need to call a professional electrician.
A homeowner can:
- Replace light bulbs or plug fuses
- Replace dimmer modules and light switches
- Replace a simple light fitting
- Replace an existing like for like socket
- Re-position sockets (as long as it doesn’t involve running a new circuit or wiring)
- Make repairs to loose wirings in switches, light fittings or plugs
- Replace a hard-wired smoke detector
- Connect or disconnect appliances
As a professional electrician in Thanet, we have over 100 years of combined experience. Over this period, we have found that every electrical job is different, what would be a simple job for a fully qualified electrician could quickly turn into a potentially dangerous situation for a homeowner.
Over the years we have been called out to residential homes in Ramsgate, Margate, Broadstairs and their surrounding areas to rectify DIY electrical works. This could be by homeowners themselves or by unregistered electricians.
Some of the stuff that we have seen are:
- Damaged light fittings
- Improperly fitted cables and switches
- We have also seen DIY electrical works set fire or leave scorched marks
In the end, this costs the homeowner a lot more money to rectify than it would have to hire an electrician in Thanet.
Fully qualified NICEIC accredited electricians
At least one person in the UK dies each week from an electrical accident and 1,000 are injured every day, which is why it’s so important that any electrical work is carried out by a skilled electrician. It’s easy to make an electrical circuit work, it is far harder to make the circuit work safely. Leave it to a fully qualified NICEIC accredited electrician.
As an accredited NICEIC approved installer and with City and Guilds Certified electricians, FBS Electrical Thanet’s work has been recognised for its quality, meeting the high standards set out in the BS7671 Industry Regulations.
